Helpful Driving Tips

BACKING UP IN A STRAIGHT LINE: Looking over your right shoulder until car has come to complete stop.

PARALLEL PARKING: Don’t hit a pole. Don’t hit a curb.

STOP SIGNS: Stop even with or behind all stop signs. If view is obstructed move forward to a second complete stop.

SIGNAL LIGHTS: Traffic signals, stop and crosswalks, make sure you stop behind each line and crosswalks.

APPROACHING INTERSECTION SIGNS: Observe all speed signs and warning signs.

LANE CHANGES: Only when it is safe and clear to do so and make sure to check your blind spot.

RIGHT OF WAY: Always yield to all incoming traffic.

PEDESTRIAN: Always yield to all incoming traffic. Always position yourself in the correct lane to turn left or right.

MAKING TURN: Turn into the nearest lane in the direction you are attempting to turn. Never exceed the speed limit when there is a posted advisory sign for a curve.

Drowsy Driving Tips

  • The best tip for drowsy driving is to not drive at all.
  • Sleep/take naps: If you feel drowsy while driving, a 15-30 minute nap can be very effective.
  • Make sure to pull over your car in a safe place.
  • Caffeine: You can gain short-term alertness by drinking coffee or other caffeine sources if driving, but it usually takes 30 minutes to take affect and wears off after a few hours.
  • Regular stops: You should stop every 100 miles or 2 hours. Switch drivers if you can.
  • Avoid Alcohol: If you have been drinking, please don’t drive! In addition to being illegal, alcohol makes you sleepy and amplifies your fatigue.

Two Second Rule

  • Choose an object near or above the road ahead. As the vehicle ahead passes it, count aloud, slowly, “one thousand one, one thousand two.”
  • If you reach the object before you finish counting, you are following too closely. Allow the other vehicle to get further ahead.
  • In bad weather, increase the count to three or four seconds for extra space.
